I've been called 'em all - hippie, crunchy, granola, freak. All with loving undertones, of course, from my friends who really have no idea what "green" is at all. This morning, my best friend, a writer doing her first story on something "green" asked me point blank, "What is green?" She was compiling products for a review and wanted to know how to judge whether something was "green" or not. I told her about the concept of Degrees of Green I've come to adopt. From light green to forest green, there's a space for everyone making an effort.
Lately, I've witnessed numerous accounts of greenbashing as people search for exact definitions and concrete guidelines as to what "green" embodies. Sometimes these guidelines do exist - for instance, the U.S. Green Building Council gives us exact parameters as to what it considers a "green" or LEED certified building. On the other hand is the world of automobiles - are fuel-efficient cars green? Or hybrids? Or only electric ones? With this variety of options, it's difficult to condemn one as "not green" when it's still a step in the right direction.
Recently, there was an extreme case of greenbashing when 3 green certified homes were burned to the ground in Seattle because the arsonist didn't consider them truly green (read the full story here). There has come to be hostility in the green space for things that are less than perfectly eco-friendly. But when almost anything is truly analyzed - whether it be a product, service, or human being - it is nearly impossible to be 100% green. All attempts at gaining green ground should be applauded and all alternatives should be weighed and analyzed. Rather than sabotage each other's efforts, let's expose the true green value of our practices for everyone's knowledge and benefit. There is room for everyone in our green space.
Four short words sum up what has lifted most successful individuals above the crowd: a little bit more.

Obviously, since none us would have a full bucket in all five, the natural question would be about how to improve where we are low.
I am a vision / strategy guy and I have found that if you try to develop vision and strategy with people who are low in that bucket, they become very overwhelmed. The 30 thousand foot view is just too frightening for people with a fear of heights.
